I am not sure to catch the point.

Do you intend to render on the icon the alternate expression you want to input?
Then, i don't see how it could be managed without either actually enlarging the icon,
or abbreviating the expression, or downscaling the rendering of the expression (what could make it unreadable..)
If it becomes possible to enter multiple lines, then we will potentially have to make the icon taller.
So, in any hand, there is no perfect or absolute solution to manage that.
If improving this situation is really a concern, please would you mind telling what should be the compromise?

Otherwise, do you intend to abbreviate the expression on the icon, inviting the user to edit it as you indicate?
