It is weird. By default, your Ubuntu should look for libs in the
directory /usr/local/lib

Under Debian - Lenny at least - (and then most probably under Ubuntu),
you should have this file :
/etc/ld.so.conf.d/libc.conf
containing the path "/usr/local/lib"
