Different guitars have different tones, but there's no such  thing as a guitar that's distorted vs others that  are clean. That is either through your  amp or through an effects pedal. He  switched guitars for  the other tonal properties  of his different guitar. But yes, you would be able to switch from a clean sound to a distorted sound with a pedal. You would want  a distortion, overdrive, or fuzz pedal, depending on exactly the sound  you wanted. Go on youtube and type some of those  terms in  and listen  to how they  sound.
