From kalakouentin at yahoo.com Thu Feb 5 04:57:03 2009 From: kalakouentin at yahoo.com (PZC) Date: Wed, 4 Feb 2009 19:57:03 -0800 (PST) Subject: no labels Message-ID: <149055.2486.qm@web51105.mail.re2.yahoo.com> Hello. I'm a new Scilab user and I'm currently using scilab-5.0.3 (Fed 4 2009) on Ubuntu 8.04.2/2.6.24-23-generic. It seems that I can not produce any axis labels even on the simplest plots. Plot2d command produces the plot fine and I have no problems rotating the plot or tweaking with the axis options but the axis labels fail to present any numbers or letters. (Screenshot available @ http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/2933/screenshotgraphicwindowxj2.png ) When activating Scilab through the terminal I get the following warning "(:19018): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale. Could not file localization file for LC_MESSAGES Switch back to the default language en_US" But I don't know if this is relevant to the problem I am encountering now. Thank you for your time reading this and I hope I'm not e-mailing the wrong list... Have a nice day. Sylvestre From manneorama at gmail.com Thu Feb 5 16:59:29 2009 From: manneorama at gmail.com (Emanuel Birge) Date: Thu, 5 Feb 2009 16:59:29 +0100 Subject: Strange behavior of 'sound' and 'sndplay' Message-ID: Afternoon! I've been having a really strange problem with the sound-playback capabilities of scilab. Description: First, I'm loading a wav-file (Fs=44100,bits=16) ripped from a Bowers&Wilkins reference-CD into scilab 5.0.3 (so the quality should be top notch!) When i play this wav-file with either 'sound' or 'sndplay' I hear this low-frequency chirping sound. I've managed to localize the chirping to somewhere below 100Hz. If I pass the audio through a highpass filter @100Hz, the chirping disappears. But the really really really strange thing is that when I do a decimation to 22050kHz (only decimation, no anti-aliasing filter or other filters!) the chirping disappears also. No matter how hard I think, I can't for the life of me figure out why this chirping appears in the first place (or why it disappears when changing the sample rate). This has led me to believe that there might be some sampling rate bug in scilab that is causing this chirp to appear, but even that seems odd since someone should have noticed it already. Any ideas? Does someone know of some other way to construct in Scilab an interaction statement as simple as the input statement? For my purposes, an implementation of the input function as simple as the one bellow would suffice, but only if done by the Scilab team, because I dont want to give complicated instructions to my students., function r = input(msg); printf("%s:",msg); s = scanf("%s");); r = eval(s); endfunction Osvaldo Jacco Kramer said on 11/11/2008 15:52: > Hi, I just tried to use the ?input? function in scilab 5.0.3 on Win XP. > When used on the commandline it works fine, but if I run it from scipad > I get errors. This version is only alpha. Especially because there are some known issues with the Mac OS X version: * For now, Tcl/Tk has been disabled. The technical reason is because both Swing and Tk need to be driven by the Core Foundation (CFRunLoopRun) and it is tricky to handle both at the same time. * As a consequence, TclSci (Scilab / Tcl interface) Scipad, GED and the variable editor are not working. * On a non-up-to-date Mac OS X, an error saying that the Dock Icon cannot be set can occur. Please update your Mac OS X Java. * Scilab starts in the background (ie behind other applications). * The merge of windows provided by the docking system does not work * Because of a Mac OS X bug, Scilab is not using the typical Mac OS X Screen Menu Bar. See: http://bugzilla.scilab.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4074 If you want to use it, uncomment the line about useScreenMenuBar in share/scilab/modules/jvm/etc/jvm_options.xml * Due to internal constraints, during the load of Scilab, it is normal to see the icon changing for a second. * On a fresh compiled version of Scilab, you could experience some issues with the unsfdcopy function. This might be related to the version of your compiler/libraries. * The refresh on some demos is not done correctly which can cause some refresh issues. * Some demos like Demos/Introduction or Demos/Polynomials crash sometime (race condition ?) If you find bugs under Mac OS X which are not in this list, please submit them on: http://bugzilla.scilab.org/ Please provide the relevant part from /var/log/system.log If you have comments, ideas or wishes about this version, please don't hesitate to tell us! When will it be ready? After migrating to 5.x branch I can't figure how to place controls just below docking header, since docking header and menu occupy some non constant space (it depends on font size so look can be varied from one PC to another). I still wonder why it's necessary to take them into account, any thoughts? 2) Also I can't find Variable Editor although in old-GUI-style it was available in Scilab 5.0.3. For what I can infer from the commits in the git tree that I'm following on a daily basis this feature was never started. AFAIK it was never discussed on the development mailing list and there is no SEP describing it. Predicting when the GUI generator will be ready in Scilab is therefore a bit hard ;-) I think a more basic question is whether this feature will be developed at some point of time or not. If I understand correctly, you (Tran & Nicolas) are running under Windows with the cygwin's X server and you are trying to launch Scilab from a Linux 32 bits through ssh ? The error is caused by this code: DisplayMode dm = screens[i].getDisplayMode(); if (dm == null) { // workaround for bug 3547 dm = screens[i].getDisplayModes()[0]; } Seems that getDisplayMode & getDisplayModes have troubles in your "special" case. > Nevertheless, I would need sooner or later this to run via cygwin OK, thanks for the information. > & as I 'm a 'total beginner' could someone report this bug for me, please ? We are a private high school in Czech Republic, and we have in plan to practice teaching of mathematic in this Scilab software. My question sounds - is this free software for school licence (around thirty places) free of payment. In the case no, please say me the price, and some contact information for this action. Thank you very much. Best regards, Luk?? Malec -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Scilab is free; ie you don't have to pay anything and access to the source is granted. Sylvestre
