It is failing also in nwni or nw ?
If yes, could you try:
strace -f -o LogFileForSylvester.log ./bin/scilab -nwni -e "exit()"
If not
strace -f -o LogFileForSylvester.log ./bin/scilab -e "exit()"
and send me the log file
