unable to create multiple subplots, e.g. plot() produces 2nd subplot only, first disappears

creating subplots is not working for me 


using  scilab 5.x running on fedora 11, thinkpad t500 laptop, 
graphics driver = 'intel integrated graphics chipset' 


plot() results in 2nd subplot only, while first one disappears 

any ideas how to resolves this?
