That was the problem for me. I hadn't used Audio Hijack in quite a while, but I had it installed. After uninstalling the Instant Hijack component I am now able to run Scilab 5.2.1, 5.2.2 and the latest 5.3 nightly build: 5.3-1292189503. The 5.3 beta 5 still crashes, but that is a separate issue that has already been fixed since the development build works.
