scilab and hebrew characters

Hello,

Is it possible for scilab to read in hebrew characters and to be able to
search for certain letters within a string or character array?

For example:

x = 'המים';

Afterwards, if you type x(1), the result is המים when I would like to
receive the response ה.

Also, I have a file full of hebrew characters and I'd like to be able to
search and do basic string manipulations and calculations.  Does scilab have
this capability?

Please let me know.
