Image cropping

Dear All
 
I don't know if it's possible but I would like to know if it's possible
to automatically calculate the width of a blank figure (see attached
fig) ? ... by converting the picture in a matrix for example ?
 
I'm able to crop the figure directly in Scilab (through ImageMagick) ->
now I would like to generalize !
