Unfortunately

by.parent.thickness=1.5; 

has the same effect as
a.thickness=1.5;

It does not change the thickness of the axis drawn by "drawaxis". I'm
beginning to think that there probably is not easy way to change the
thickness of axes created by "drawaxis". Perhaps there are other ways of
adding new axes to the plot?
