Oops, forget that last message!!! I had accidentally left the old tarfile binary in my path and that's why I was getting the same results (should have guessed that from the -nwni timestamp, grrr). Anyway, after removing it I can now start Scilab 6.0.0 in Ubuntu 17.10 :-) Thanks Nikolay! Paul
