Hello Eric,

I finally created an atoms module name "xlreadwrite". As it is based on 
a Java library, it will never be integrated in Scilab, as the provided 
features (read/write xls and xlsx files in a transparent way) should be 
available in -nwni mode. But in the meantime I think that this module 
can help some of us. You can give it a try with

--> atomsInstall xlreadwrite

and experiment the help examples and your own files, especially xlsx 
ones.  For the records, this module fixes the following bugs and/or 
feature requests:
