I have a comment concerning the syntax.
I'm not particularly fan of the "inline" syntax without parenthesis.

Is your:

     xlabel "Title for abscissas" fontsize 2

syntaxic sugar for

     xlabel( "Title for abscissas", fontsize=2)

or something equivalent?
