If you are moving to Ubuntu Linux, may I suggest that you have a look at the *.deb package from Ubuntu packages (<a href="http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/scilab">http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/scilab</a>). This is not the latest version (Version 5.2.2), but it will build automatically on your machine (64 or 32 bit) with all of the dependencies met. I am of the opinion that one should work with stable versions of any software package when one is trying to do real work.
