Ok guys. everything works. I had not installed scilab, but scilab-full-bin.
apt-get install scilab scilab-plotlib scilab-test scilab-celestlab
scilab-ann scilab-scimax scilab-data libscilab-java
cured all the non-existent problems.

So I have scilabs running on a wondermedia pad ;-).

Thanks to everyone.

I will be buzzing the list now and then, as I am a total newbie to scilab.
